The Special Needs Touch Class
The Center for Touch is fully trained to assist parents/caregivers to provide their child with safe beneficial nurturing touch, gentle strokes and/or massage guided by each child’s unique diagnosis or challenge.
Though there is certain diagnosis where some forms of touch are contraindicated, when it is not contraindicated, it has proven to enhance or compliment other modalities and treatments which the child may be receiving such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or sensory integration therapy. It is the goal of the Center for Pediatric Touch to educate parents on modifications of strokes to adapt them to fit their child’s needs.
Most of the time, the Special Needs Class is completed in 2 or 3 private sessions each 30 to 45 minutes long. This can be done at our location or as private home visits. If the family requests a 3rd or 4th visit this may be arranged for a nominal fee after an evaluation of the first 2 visits. When applicable by developmental stage, story massage, songs and themes will be added. This class has an extensive focus on precautions and recognizing your child’s cues and “asking permission” to give them a massage. It is important to recognize disengagement cues as well.
An added bonus some families have experienced, if a parent desires, is encouragement for the parents to also apply the massage techniques to each other to help lower stress and promote health and wellness through their own deeper sleep. Parents taking care of themselves in this regard have a positive overall affect on the family.
